I have always dreamed of going to the Kentucky Derby and sipping on some bourbon-filled cocktails on a hot summer’s day sporting my Sunday’s best and a fabulous fascinator. And with the Hasting’s Racetrack opening in a few weeks, I may be able to satiate this thirst (for now) locally. In anticipation of the new season, I’ve created a new take on the classic Mint Julep. By adding a bit of chocolate bitters for taste and mint cotton candy for aesthetic, this drink is transformed into something fresh for the fresh start of the season.
2.0 oz. of bourbon
4 dashes chocolate aztec bitters
3 oz. gingerbeer
2 sprigs of mint
peppermint cotton candy (or 1 oz. simple syrup/1 sugar cube)
In a julep tin (or cocktail glass) add one sprig of mint and bitters. Muddle in the bottom of the glass. Fill glass with crushed ice. Pour in bourbon, stir and top with gingerbeer. Garnish with mint and mint-flavoured cotton candy and serve.
Don’t have cotton candy? No problem, just substitute it for a teaspoon of powdered sugar.
