Whisky Review: Bearface 1/11 Series

I’ve never met anyone like you before…

I often find quirky people captivate me in such an interesting way. I don’t know about you but there’s something about having my perceptions challenged (respectfully of course) that I find so attractive. For me, normalcy breeds complacency and therefore being challenged creates curiosity and excitement in life.

Speaking of curiosity + excitement, I have to tell you about my friend Andres Faustinelli @the Master Blender for Bearface Whisky. Every time I’ve chatted with him, he speaks with so much passion + appreciation for the brands he works with, experiments he conducts & ideas he has. He is constantly on a mission to push the boundaries of what is “normal” or “traditional” not just with whisky, but with other spirit categories too.

This is why I couldn’t think of a better whisky to showcase for the first “Quirky + Unorthodox” other than the Bearface ‪1/11‬ Series.

Released in 2019, this Canadian whisky doesn’t just mature in Tequila/Mezcal barrels, it actually HAS Mezcal Espadin blended directly into it! SAY WHAAAAAT?

Check out their full “Dating Profile” below.
‼️ TL;DR — Bearface ‪1/11‬ reminds me of: Traditionally made barbacoa tacos.

More notes on Canada’s quirky whisky laws:

1️⃣ In Canada we have the Certificates of Age and Origin for Distilled Spirits Produced or Packaged in Canada Order. This legislation states that whisky that is to be exported as a blend can contain up to 9.090% imported spirits in it + still be labelled as a Canadian Whisky

2️⃣ It must be a spirit or wine must be bottled at no less than 40% ABV

3️⃣ Therefore unlike other whiskies that would use peat to dry malted grain and thus create a “smoky” note in the whisky, Bearface ‪1/11‬ uses mezcal to add a unique smoky character that you won’t find in any other whisky

4️⃣ Did you know that Canada has some of the largest peatlands in the world? Think 113.6 million hectares of it. So Andres, when are we going to see a peated edition of Bearface using some Hudson Bay peat and malted Canadian Rye? 😉
