I Like My Whisky The Way I Like My Men Japanese Whiskey TASTE

Whisky Review: Kujira 12 Year

Are you a mythical creature? Because there’s no way you’re real…

In Canadian folklore, we have the Ogopogo 🦕 a lake monster that inhabits Okanagan Lake here in BC. Swedish King Sverre of Norway spoke of the Kraken 🦑. The Loch Ness monster is a fabled creature that lives in the Scottish Loch Ness lake 🐉

But have you heard of the bake-kujira before 🐋? If you’re unfamiliar with this legendary creature, it hails from western Japan and is translated as the “ghost whale”.

And like this ghost whale, Kujira 12 from @ts_global is hard to find and has some pretty supernatural tasting notes. ✨✨

Made by the Kumesen Syuzo, unlike the other Kujira expressions, this one is extremely small batch, and reserved for 12 years exclusively in Spanish sherry barrels. There were only 500 bottles released in Canada ‼️.

TL;DR — This whisky reminds me of a pear balsamic salad with dried cherries. 🥗🍒🍐

This whisky is an absolutely gorgeous bottle that is a statement piece on your backbar — it’s definitely “Instagram Ready.” But unlike some of the beautiful, yet vapid bottles out there, this one is so interesting and full of substance.

More notes about this whisky:

1️⃣ In Japan there are whisky terms that mean different things than in other countries around the world.

2️⃣ One of these terms is “Single Grain.” In countries like Japan and Canada distilleries will label their whisky as a “Single Grain” when it is made from a single grain that is not malt (like Kujira 12). However, in countries like Scotland and Ireland, “Single Grain” whiskies are defined as a whisky made at a single distillery that uses one or more grains and is typically column distilled.

3️⃣ Rice whiskies are often made from Shochu which is a distilled spirit made in Japan.
